The History of Vokel Cellars
Vokel Cellars began with a conversation amongst friends in a hotel lobby bar in St. Paul, Minnesota, which escalated to a serious debate regarding the trends and gaps within modern winemaking and the marketplace. After several bottles of wine had come and gone, the group of friends (Gregg Cummings, his wife Beth, and California Natives Liam McCormick and Dana von Sternberg) curated a plan to create a boutique wine brand primarily focusing on creating small batch wines that excite the palate for wine drinkers. After a few years, the dream and vision finally became a reality with one single wine! In 2024, Vokel Cellars expanded to several single vineyards and obtained a portfolio that draws attention to wine consumers everywhere. Currently, Vokel Cellars focuses on unique vineyard sites that shine through in the finished wine, without needing fancy words to make them seem more appealing!
Vokel Cellars Founder: Dana von Sternberg
Vokel Cellars founder and winemaker Dana von Sternberg took his first steps in a gem office in Germany and grew up within the diamond industry. Throughout his early life, he worked with his family to manage a wholesale diamond cutting shop in Sonoma County. His interest in wine didn’t flourish until he was approached by winemaking friends to manage the finances and administrative side of a boutique wine label in 2010. Dana began learning every aspect of the industry as the wine company grew rapidly, without any formal training.
In late 2015, Dana was given the opportunity, and he opted to leave his role as CFO of Christopher Creek Winery to farm a 4.5-acre Pinot vineyard and commit to the Vokel Cellars brand full-time. Dana began making wines that let the vineyard speak for itself by focusing on small lots and minimal intervention. The 2016 vintage (Dana’s first year of full-time winemaking) came with the first Wine Advocate Scores of 91+. In 2018, the opening of Vokel’s very own winery and the first Wine Enthusiast 94-point score was received. In 2021, Dana assumed the role of a winemaker for Nantucket Vineyards, producing their wines at the Vokel Cellars Winery in California and shipping them to Nantucket.
